August Updates

Dear Maplewood,

As you’ve heard me say, we are “small but mighty.” While our numbers are smaller than they once were, we still have much to offer those looking for a church where they can belong, serve, grow, and be cared for.

As we continue to narrow our focus (since it’s better to do a few things well than many things poorly) we remain dedicated to being present in the community. That means, however, learning to connect with our neighbors a bit differently than we probably have before. Like the men of Issachar in 1 Chronicles 12:32, we must understand the times and know what to do. That isn’t always easy, but it is God’s work for us in this season.

To that end, the Consistory has approved an agreement with Prime Edge Media to overhaul our social media presence. In the coming months, you may see the owner Parker DeKrubber and members of his team in worship gathering photos and video, and asking questions. While there’s no magic formula for church growth, we really want to do a better job telling Maplewood’s story clearly and consistently, especially to younger generations that naturally connect through digital media.

We’ve also installed a new digital access system at the front entrance that allows access to be managed remotely. Once the building is re-keyed, renters and ministry leaders will use electronic key cards. Old physical keys will no longer work. This is a significant enhancement in both security and convenience, making access easier for everyone.

This Sunday, August 9, we’ll also welcome Allison Hoving as our new Facilities Administrator. Striving to be faithful stewards of what God has entrusted to us, leasing space to organizations aligned with our mission provides “passive income” that enables us to meet real needs in the Holland community.

In her part-time role, Allison will oversee the master calendar, coordinate with renters, and help ensure that building access and events run smoothly. She and I are also working to simplify the rental process and brainstorm future opportunities. If individuals or organizations needing space come to mind, please let us know.

Allison is the Founder and Director of Empowering Youth Global Connection (EYGC). Outside of Maplewood, she leads EYGC, serves as a rabbit, goat, and chicken leader with Allegan County 4-H, and enjoys cheering on—and driving—her children to their many activities.
