The HISTORY OF
MAPLEWOOD REFORMED CHURCH
For over 80 years, Maplewood Reformed Church has served the Holland area for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are a church with a rich history and a desire to see a community redeemed by the power of the Holy Spirit since our first service in 1941.
We were planted as a church by the Reformed Church in America's Holland Classis on the corner of 34th Street and Columbia Ave. The hope was that in planting a church in this location, individuals and families who lived south of 25th St. in Holland might come to know Jesus Christ. This desire continues today.
Our first worship service was on July 6, 1941, with 28 people in attendance. The very next day a Vacation Bible School was started for the community. This VBS was the start of many ways we show the love of God to our neighbors and in the world. The first sermon by Pastor Ten Clay was on the subject of “Praying without Ceasing”.
Worship and prayer continue to be vital parts of the life of our church. In our now 80+ years as a community of faith, we have experienced many joys and have persevered through many challenges. We are grateful for how God has carried us through all of these times and that we are able to be the family we are today.
